TECHNOLOGY

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometry

How it works: XRF machines emit X-rays onto the gold sample, causing the atoms to emit fluorescent X-rays.
X-rays are unique to each element, allowing the machine to determine the composition of the gold.

Advantages: Non-destructive, fast, and highly accurate.

Limitations: Less accurate for low-purity gold samples or those with complex alloys.

Fire Assay

How it works: A gold sample is mixed with lead and other fluxes, then heated in a furnace. The gold alloys with the lead and forms a bead. The lead is then removed, leaving behind pure gold. The weight of the gold bead is compared to the original weight of the sample to determine the purity.

Advantages: Highly accurate, especially for low-purity gold samples.

Limitations: Destructive, time-consuming, and requires skilled technicians.

Acid Testing

How it works: A small amount of acid is applied to the gold sample. The reaction of the acid with the gold can indicate the purity based on the color of the solution and the rate of reaction.

Advantages: Simple and inexpensive.

Limitations: Less accurate than other methods, especially for high-purity gold.

Choosing the Right Technology:

The choice of technology depends on various factors, including the desired accuracy, the type of gold sample, and the cost. For most practical purposes, XRF spectroscopy is a popular choice due to its balance of accuracy, speed, and non-destructive nature. However, for high-precision analysis, fire assay may be preferred.

Additional Considerations:

By understanding these technologies and their limitations, you can make informed decisions when buying or selling gold.
